Eleanor McDowall Workshop – April 9th 2016
AIRPI is delighted to present a very special one day workshop with one of the UK’s leading radio producers, Eleanor McDowall from Falling Tree Productions. Eleanor is a multi-award winning radio maker whose work has featured everywhere from across the BBC to ABC in Australia and KCRW in America. Eleanor is also the series producer for BBC 4’s Shortcuts, a series of short sound rich story led audio features from independent radio producers around the world. The series was praised for “demonstrating the power of spoken word radio” at the 2014 Radio Academy Awards and has become an exciting space for new voices in Radio. Eleanor has also helped to pioneer animated radio with her own work on Shortcuts forming the basis of the talk ‘Making Radio Visible’ at 2014’s International Features Conference.
On April 9th, we’ll be presenting a series of sessions with Eleanor including the following; A listening session of carefully curated radio features from around the world that inspire Eleanor to continue to push the boundary of what can be done with both sound & story.
A two part session where Eleanor will present a recent documentary she’s been working on and is due for broadcast in April on BBC4. Members will be able to access the full doc online so they can listen to it in advance. Part 1 of this session will then cover everything from the concept behind the programme, getting it commissioned, challenges in production and lessons learned. Part 2 will look at how the programme was assembled on Pro-Tools, particular production techniques used and a look into the creative process behind this documentary.
The day will conclude with a very exciting closing session where AIRPI members will receive an exclusive first look at the opening round for the next series of Shortcuts. We’ll learn what kind of stories work well on the series and members are encouraged to bring ideas for their own mini documentary on the day. For a sample of the adventurous and diverse radio stories that appear on the series, take a listen to the last series here. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01mk3f8/episodes/player)
